Teaching Civics and American Government

Due to how heated politics have recently gotten, it can be challenging to teach a regular government course. While the purpose is to educate how the government works, students come in with different opinions. They are old enough to hear their parents talking at home. Unit 1: Constitutional Foundation:

Students will go back to the start of government to see why it matters. They will delve deeper into the Constitution and see why it is a founding document. Thus, students will see why Constitutional principles are at the core of our government. 

Unit 2: Political Beliefs and Behaviors:

Students will love the 11 days of this section. To bring in engagement, students will learn about political parties through stations. Additionally, they will learn all about voting and why it matters. Furthermore, they will learn what exactly interest groups are through engaging activities. Ultimately, students will better understand political parties with these lessons!

Unit 3: Executive Branch:

Over the next 4 days, students will understand the roles of this branch. First, they will explore the electoral college through creative stations. Second, they will gain a clear grasp on the various roles of the president. Additionally, there is a project that will ensure students understand how complex the presidency really is. 

Unit 4: Legislative Branch:

Students will begin this section by learning all about Congress. To do this, they will learn about the House of Representatives and the Senate. In elaboration, students will learn about enumerated powers and how a bill becomes a law. Ultimately, students will see criticisms of Congress and how detailed this branch is. 

Unit 5: Judicial Branch:

These 6 lessons will greatly help students learn about The Supreme Court. For instance, they will see how the different branches and the Supreme Court have to work together in many ways. This rigorous resource will definitely help students understand how hard the Supreme Court works! 

Unit 6: Final Research Paper and Project:

To finish, students will choose a topic related to the American Government. Then, they will go through an 8-step process. For example, they will create a personal opinion on the topic with the support of research. Specifically, they will also have to analyze the U.S. Census Data on the topic and create their own survey. Lastly, students will put everything together to create a well-written research paper.
